To say that Marlfield House is rather understated by country-house hotel standards is not a criticism; there are grander castles in Ireland, but few places that strike such a pleasant balance between traditional luxury and modern conviviality. This 19th-century Regency-style house is certainly a splendid one, don’t get us wrong; the estate, too, has much to offer, including woodland, gardens, and a lovely ornamental lake.

In the main house are 18 bedrooms, each one antique in style and subtly modern in its comforts. The Lodge, meanwhile, is a two-bedroom cottage with a touch more privacy. And the Pond Suites are modern, sustainably constructed open-plan free-standing villas surrounded by woodland, whose interiors split the difference between country-house elegance and boutique-hotel chic. To all this Marlfield House adds a pair of restaurants, the formal Conservatory Restaurant and the more casual Duck Terrace Restaurant, Café & Bar.
