The name Aarunya comes from the Sanskrit for the first rays of the sun, and the Knuckles mountain range, UNESCO-listed and ever-present, is what greets guests at that hour. A former tea and spice plantation, the nine-acre hillside estate now holds eight villas worked into the terrain without a single tree felled, using local materials and craftspeople at every stage. The Sky Tented Villa, under a safari-style canopy, has its own pool and an open-air bathroom framing the valley. Aarogya Spa covers Ayurvedic and Balinese treatments; the Aahaara fine-dining experience ends with a garden-to-table feast at a communal table, to live Sri Lankan music.
