Kingston, Ontario’s Smith Hotel is an unusual one on both the large and the small scale — the former because it’s made not from a historical residence but from a 19th-century church, and the latter because its units are less like typical hotel rooms and more like loft apartments, split across two levels and full of contrast between modern design and antique ecclesiastical architecture.

The lofts occupy the lower levels, with the main floor of the church now functioning as a co-working space. Each one features an open-plan living room, a small but fully equipped kitchen and dining area, and plenty of mid-century modernist-inspired style. Services like a spa or a restaurant are beyond the ambitions of this residential-style hotel, but with downtown Kingston close by the Smith’s offerings are more than enough.
