No matter how many French castle hotels you’ve seen, you haven’t seen another quite like Domaine du Château des Pères. In large part, it’s what it sounds like: an estate with roots in the 12th century, and a castle that, in its current form, dates back to the 18th. But it’s the remainder that makes it truly unique — alongside its meticulously restored château is a vast sculpture park and a hotel whose pod-like rooms hang like bluebells from a towering central axis.

The Hotel L’EssenCiel features 42 essentially identical rooms, 36 of them elevated above the estate and another six at ground level. They’re decorated in a contemporary style — historical château-chic would be an odd fit for an igloo-shaped bedroom — but they’re warm and welcoming all the same, in a color palette that harmonizes with the natural surroundings. And to the hotel is added a state-of-the-art spa and a diverse selection of dining and drinking options, culminating in the One-MICHELIN-Star La Table des Pères.
