One town south of Asbury Park on the famous Jersey Shore is Ocean Grove, a remarkably dense little Victorian village that’s set apart from its neighbors not only by its historic architecture but by its status as a dry town, with alcohol sales prohibited within its limits. It turns out this constraint is just the thing to nudge the local hospitality scene towards something a little more grown up; the result is the stylish and unusually refined Hotel Albatross.
Along with some functional upgrades, including the town’s first elevator, the Albatross’s interiors have been thoroughly redesigned; the look is more reminiscent of mid-century modernism than it is the Victorian era. The reception desk doubles as an espresso bar, and there’s no need to worry that the lack of a bar dampens the mood — you’re welcome to bring your own wine, and in a pinch the town limits lie mere blocks away. Much closer is the beach, and bikes are available to extend guests’ range.
