Contemporary Classic & Quiet
Right on the corner of Parker’s Piece and just a ten-minute walk from Cambridge University sits another of the city's historical landmarks, its oldest hotel, the University Arms, which has been hosting guests and serving locals since as far back as 1834. It’s been given a modern makeover by architect John Simpson and interior designer Martin Brudnizki, who has dressed the guest rooms and suites with his signature flair for colour whilst keeping his usually flamboyant style toned down in favour of a more classically British look. Edwardian influences can be seen in the printed headboards, bespoke armchairs and writing desks, whilst bookshelves stacked with books from Heywood Hill of Mayfair, and a Book Butler service to handpick a more personalised selection of tomes, is of course a nod to Cambridge’s literary reputation. Views are equally attractive, whether overlooking the inner courtyard, historic Regent Street, or Parker’s Piece. Restaurant and bar Parker’s Tavern have been going for as long as the hotel and now serve a mix of British classics and international favourites, and there’s a regular programme of events, including Friday night Jazz sessions and free Saturday morning city tours.
