The Gargiulo family has owned this rocky spur above the Bay of Naples since the late 19th century, and it was the formidable Donna Carmela, known as "Carmela of the ice," who transformed it into a hotel in 1968. The 19 rooms are white-walled and simply styled, with crimson, yellow, or navy accents and large windows or balconies looking out over the bay toward Vesuvius. The position is exceptional: on a promontory that Roman aristocrats, Franciscan monks, and European painters all chose for the same reason, with Capri, Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast all within easy reach.
