The night before opening in December 2003, thirteen turtles came ashore at Holbox — and that settled the name. Adults-only and barefoot in spirit, the hotel has rooms and suites stepping up from beachfront ground level to rooftop terraces with private pools looking out over the Gulf of Mexico. Yucatan honey toiletries, woven hammocks and Starlink internet make up the in-room picture. Mandarina does Mediterranean-Mexican cooking on the sand, AMA is a Japanese bar with second-floor sunset views, and UMO fires everything from local and organic produce. Complimentary yoga most mornings keeps the pace slow.
