Merrill House

343 Main Street East, Picton, Canada
14 Rooms
Traditional Elegance & Lively
The lovely little town of Picton, in Ontario’s Prince Edward County, is maybe the most likely setting in all of Canada for a hotel like Merrill House. This red brick Gothic Revival mansion stands just off Main Street, a block from Picton Harbour, but feels quiet and quasi-rural all the same. And the style is unforgettable. Both inside and out, Merrill House is anglophilic even by Canadian standards — its owners live part-time in London, and the house’s décor wouldn’t look a whisker out of place there.

Each of the 14 rooms and suites is different, but all feature an eclectic and individual blend of the antique and the modern, including plenty of playful contemporary art. A few go to extremes — the Future Room is furnished on both floor and ceiling — and all are as subtly luxurious as they are overtly stylish.

A hotel like this could very reasonably go without a bar or a restaurant, but Merrill House has both; Bar Atlas makes its home in a riotously colorful conservatory space, and features a wide selection of local wines alongside Old World vintages, while Brasserie Alexandria is as classically French as the house’s second-floor Parisian Suite.
