Opened in 1891 as the only first-class hotel on St Helier's seafront, the Grand Jersey has accumulated more history than most. During the German occupation of the Channel Islands from 1940 to 1945, the hotel was commandeered as military offices and quarters, its furniture burned for fuel, leaving it unable to reopen immediately after liberation. It has since welcomed the Queen Mother, and Queen Elizabeth II chose it in 2005 to host the lunch marking the 60th anniversary of the island's liberation. The 108 rooms, many looking directly over St Aubin's Bay toward Elizabeth Castle, range from teal and olive-toned deluxe rooms to full suites with separate living areas.
