China is increasingly where you go to see the most impressive modern luxury hotels, and that’s certainly true of this one — Capella Tufu Bay is a collaboration between architects Jean-Michel Gathy and Bill Bensley, both hospitality design all-stars. The public spaces are monumental, especially the circular lobby with its ornamental pool, and the rooms and villas are suitably residential — at their substantial size you wouldn’t call them “cozy,” but they’re warm and plush even as they verge on opulence.
Nor is design the only thing Capella Tufu Bay has going for it. Capella’s hotels and resorts are famous for their personal service, and for the cultural authenticity of their experiences and excursions. A first-rate spa, too, is present as a matter of course; this one includes a hammam and a snow cabin among its offerings. And a wealth of restaurants and bars see to guests’ needs, from a chic and casual poolside bar to Lan Ting, an elevated Chinese dining experience.
