Traditional Elegance & Quiet
A 14th-century Carthusian monastery on the outskirts of Siena, Certosa di Maggiano has had an interesting life. In the 1970s it served as the home of artist Anna Ricordati, who hosted Monica Vitti, Alberto Sordi, and other Italian film luminaries within its cloistered walls. Today, the rooms run maximalist: patterned wallpaper, bold tiling, mismatched prints, against the original frescoes and vaulted ceilings. The pool terrace is pink and archway-framed, the Magnolia Bar gathers guests around a fire pit under a centuries-old tree, and Siena's Palio is on the doorstep.
