Even more than most beachfront boutique hotels, Nerea takes water as its central inspiration. The name means “flow,” and the hotel stands mere yards from the waters of Tankah Bay, whose crystalline waters are supplemented by a lagoon-style swimming pool as well as a handful of plunge pools. It’s located just outside the established hotel zone, which makes for a slightly wilder setting as well as a slightly more tranquil atmosphere than the typical Tulum boutique; the city is easily reachable but pleasingly separate. The finest accommodations are the rooftop suites, the best of which directly face the water. And while the beach itself is a rocky one, a small pier serves as the launch for kayaking, stand-up paddling, and snorkeling, all included in the nightly rate.
