Donaji, from Chef Isai Cuevas, who first built a loyal following selling tamales at Bay Area farmers’ markets, remains a cheerful neighborhood spot centered around Oaxacan cooking and exceptional masa work. Named after a Zapotec princess in homage to the chef’s roots, the restaurant continues to showcase handmade tortillas, earthy moles and carefully prepared antojitos. Tamales remain a highlight, but dishes like crispy tacos dorados de pollo with black bean purée and crema, or enchiladas draped in a deep, complex 20-ingredient mole negro, reveal the kitchen’s attention to detail just as clearly. Larger plates, including pollo asado or short ribs with mole coloradito, further highlight the richness and depth of Oaxacan flavors. House-made aguas frescas remain the perfect accompaniment to the savory, earthy fare.
