Suvenir: Where Tradition Flows with the Sava

"Nomen est omen"—true to its name, this address is likely to become a cherished memory in the minds and hearts of all those fortunate enough to have spent time here.

On the Sava River, which flows through Belgrade, there is a houseboat that opened its doors in 2012 as a restaurant.
Here, nestled between verdant banks and away from tourist crowds, where the Sava crosses the city before joining the Danube, Suvenir is a welcoming and refined establishment where the cuisine pays respectful homage to local traditions and, thanks also to its distinctive structure, proves the ideal setting for creating memories tied to the place and its culinary heritage.

Following a renovation completed in 2019, Suvenir has become the realm of the most authentic Serbian cuisine. The restaurant’s concept is to present the region’s gastronomy in a more modern and contemporary manner, using seasonal ingredients of exceptional quality, while being deeply respectful of authentic flavors and identity.

The location, nothing short of unique, lends its own charm to the gastronomic narrative: traditionally, Belgrade’s riverfront has been occupied primarily by clubs and cafés, leaving a void for a genuine, family-style restaurant with a traditional approach to food. Today, Suvenir fills that gap, serving as a valued reference point for both locals and discerning tourists seeking a dining experience that weaves a cultural narrative through local terroir and customs.

In the kitchen is Vaso Milenić, involved in the restaurant’s story since its opening. Milenić began his career here working the line and, through dedication and tremendous commitment, advanced to his current position as head chef.
The menu philosophy is based on developing and reinterpreting traditional Serbian cuisine, though certain dishes remain unchanged despite the passage of time: these continue to be prepared in a rustic fashion, exactly as they were made many years ago.

One example is the house-made bread still baked over fire, in the same manner as prepared by previous generations. The menu otherwise changes at least four times annually, with seasonal updates following the availability of fresh market ingredients.

Among the dishes on offer: Mangalica “Bajadera” (layered pressed bacon and Mangalica ham), Goose Liver, and then Kulen, Bacon Tartare, Beef Cheeks (slow-cooked in red wine sauce, served with potato purée and house-made gnocchi), Peas (a reconstruction of a traditional home-cooked dish) or Lamb Rolata served with cream of eggplant, along with abundant fish (including freshwater varieties) and delectable seafood: the menu’s king remains the Perch served with pea purée, though the grilled octopus is also worthy of attention.

Among the hot appetizers, Veal Liver, Prunes Wrapped in Bacon or Meat Burek and, continuing with the protein theme, Plijeskavica (a Balkan dish commonly consisting of a large spiced hamburger made from a mixture of ground meats) which here is served on a bed of truffle rice and brought to table under a silver cloche.

The wine list is equally impressive, comprising over 400 labels and offering vertical selections of Serbian wines: one of the most comprehensive and interesting in the city. The by-the-glass selection features several local wineries, with particular focus on indigenous grape varieties.
