Alba
6-7 Market Street, GY1 1HE St Peter Port
££ · Modern Cuisine

One of several top restaurants in the capital of St Peter Port on the east coast, Alba has been awarded a Bib Gourmand for its excellent value cooking. This is a restaurant that’s as kind to the wallet as it is to the tastebuds, with an array of dishes that are perfect for sharing and which absorb influences from around Europe. Each one brims with flavour, often thanks to the great use of the wood-fired grill. The setting inside the Les Arcades market building (think high ceilings and ornate details) really adds to the experience.

Fukku
16-18 Smith Street, GY1 2JQ St Peter Port
££ · Japanese Contemporary

Guernsey may famously lie between Britain and France, but Fukku looks far beyond both to deliver a menu filled with Japanese goodness. Busy and buzzy in equal measure, this modern take on the classic izakaya is the kind of place to bring some friends and order plenty, whether it’s a sushi platter selected by the chef, nourishing bowls of ramen or the terrific yakitori skewers. Enjoy a glass or two from the sake list as well and you’ll be giggling over the restaurant’s name in no time.

Hook
North Plantation, GY1 2LQ St Peter Port
££ · Meats and Grills

This is the kind of grill-based restaurant where the kitchen’s primary goal is to take top-drawer ingredients and let them shine in their natural glory. Start off with a selection of small plates to share, before choosing from the likes of lamb rump, sirloin on the bone or even whole sea bass cooked over fire and served with a simple garnish. Before or after dining, make sure you stop for a cocktail in the Casbah bar, as well as taking in the view of the harbour just over the road.

Le Nautique
Quay Steps, GY1 2LE St Peter Port
£££ · Seafood

As you may have guessed from its name, there’s a decidedly nautical feel to this long-standing member of the Guernsey restaurant scene. It’s been a favourite with holidaymakers for years, serving up glisteningly fresh fish and shellfish in a former sailmaker’s warehouse. There are nautical touches to the interior design, without descending into kitsch, while the prime harbourside location makes for a lovely stroll before dinner. As with all good seafood spots, the menu changes depending on the catch.

Vraic
Mont Cuet Road, Chouet Bay, GY3 5AT Vale
££££ · Modern Cuisine

Quite simply the best restaurant on the island, Vraic is the brainchild of Chef Nathan Davies, who previously held a Star at SY23 in Aberystwyth. His pride in Wales is still clear to see – such as in the terrific bread made with Welsh grains – but he now mostly draws from Guernsey’s bountiful larder, in dishes that utilise clever combinations to maximise flavour. Vraic makes the most of its north coast setting, occupying a prime spot right by the water’s edge so you can take in the sea air before dining.
