Possibly the grandest urban hotel in all of southern Italy, the Grand Hotel et Des Palmes is certainly Palermo’s most classically elegant lodging. It’s been a part of the city’s history since it opened in the middle of the 19th century, and as the 21st advances, it’s in the finest form of its career, thanks to the preservation of its most iconic elements as well as judicious updates to its rooms, suites, and public spaces.
The accommodations are looking particularly sober, in shades of gray and brown, with antique-style furniture and historical architecture livened by an occasional modern contrast, like the freestanding bathtub in the bedroom of the Suite Terrace. The spaces are generous enough, and the bathrooms, supplied with Acqua di Parma products, are dramatic, in high-contrast black and white stone.
Its city-center location makes it an obvious meeting place for locals and travelers alike, who gather in its three restaurants: there’s the NeoBistrot, a restaurant and “mixology bar” set in an ornate hall of mirrors; Le Palmette, which serves exquisite gourmet fare beneath crystal chandeliers; and Ouvèrture, which opens onto the fifth-floor terrace with a commanding view of Palermo.
