Classico contemporaneo e Isolato
Myanmar is already well off the beaten path for a great many travelers, to say nothing of a private island in the Myeik Archipelago. It’s three hours by boat from the mainland to Wa Ale Island, home to Wa Ale Resort, an escape that is quite unlike anything else in this part of the world.
Here conservation comes first. The island itself is publicly owned, and the resort operates a foundation dedicated to preserving it. And with a mere 15 units — 14 villas divided between sites on the beach and in the forest canopy, as well as the four-bedroom Beach House — the resort keeps a modest profile.
The accommodations are luxurious, but laid-back, classic examples of barefoot luxury. And if it’s a touch less lavish than the phrase “private island resort” might suggest, it’s by design — one thing Wa Ale will never be is overbuilt. At the same time, every luxe must-have is present, from the spa and yoga pavilion to the open-air Burmese restaurant. And the focus, as always, is on the environment, with activities designed to maximize contact with the forest, the sea, and the local wildlife.
