Modern Design & Lively
When you think of Newcastle your first thought is almost certainly not of elegant country house hotels. But Seaham Hall & Serenity Spa, in a coastal village just minutes outside the city, is nothing if not elegant — this was the site of one of Byron’s weddings, after all. But the mere existence of the house isn’t the end of the surprises. Wait till you see what they’ve done with the place.
The massiveness of the renovation was balanced, apparently, by its sensitivity — though there’s a decidedly fresh sparkle about the public spaces, the style is still very much in keeping with the house’s heritage. The rooms are, if anything, a little bit more contemporary, and below the surface they’re as modern as they come, with the lighting and entertainment systems controlled by central bedside panels — but equally impressive are lower-tech charms, like working fireplaces and the occasional sea view.
In a manor house hotel a fine dining restaurant is a given, and an underground walkway leads to the remarkably well-equipped Serenity Spa and its attached fitness center. Meanwhile, a few minutes one way is Newcastle, and a few minutes the other way is Durham — and when it comes to the natural setting, this stretch of North Sea coastline borders on the sublime, as does the Lake District to the west.
