Modern Design & Lively
In 1932, Theodor Welschen cut timber from his own forest and split stone from local rock to build a house on the hillside above Zermatt by hand, so remote that neighbors called him crazy. Three generations later, the family completed a full rebuild in 2025, expanding from 14 to 29 rooms and adding a 600-square-meter spa. The Sunnegga lift station is steps away and south-facing rooms have direct Matterhorn views from their balconies. Dietmar Sawyere, who runs two Michelin-starred restaurants in Nidwalden, opened Ad Lib here in 2024: Ad Lib's menu is rewritten each week around the market and whatever the mountains are producing.
