It’s not easy to find a more spectacular corner of the Appalachians than this 825-acre expanse at the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. And while Cataloochee Ranch has been in operation for close to a century, it’s only in recent years that it’s been upgraded to its current high level of luxury. The property remains crisscrossed with 12 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding, but it’s now also home to a restaurant, Switchback, that serves High Country classics reimagined by a French-trained chef.

The cabins and suites have gone accordingly upscale as well. The look is decidedly modern-rustic, and impressively stylish, combining antique decorative elements with first-rate modern comforts. 2026 will see the opening of Cataloochee Ranch’s spa, as well as an outdoor swimming pool; outdoor activities are near-limitless, and in winter include the neighboring Cataloochee Ski Area.
