The Best New Hotels in New York City

New York’s hotel boomlet continues as flagship brands make their big Manhattan debut while smaller, indie brands bring a bit of energy to the outer boroughs. With so many dynamic new properties opening, there is something for every taste and budget. Located at 57th Street and 5th Avenue, in the heart of Manhattan, the Aman hotel was one of the splashiest debuts when it opened its doors in 2022. The property is in the iconic Crown Building, one of the city’s finest examples of Beaux-Arts architecture, which also housed the first Museum of Modern Art. The interiors were overseen by Jean-Michel Gathy, a veteran Aman designer—he’s worked with the brand since the 1980s. Here he’s brought Aman’s soothing Asian-influenced minimalism with plenty of water features, fireplaces, and greenery, from bonsai trees to Japanese maples. When guests enter the hotel starting on the 14th floor, they are greeted by a dramatic, double-height atrium. The 83 suites are spacious, starting at a whopping 745 square feet, and are done in neutral colors with gas fireplaces and Asian-inspired screens. All guests get access to the 1920s-inspired Jazz Club, which serves classic cocktails and over-the-top small bites like truffled grilled cheese. Guests can work it off the next morning at the gym which has an indoor pool, sauna, hammam, and cryotherapy chamber. Meanwhile, Pendry Manhattan West is located in the former train yards on the city’s west side, a development which features shopping venues as well as big-name restaurants from Danny Meyer and Masaharu Morimoto. The hotel is the perfect respite from Midtown’s madness, featuring 164 understated rooms with modern furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows offering excellent views of the city. Midtown

There was a time when the Aman name was strictly synonymous with secluded resort destinations; Aman Tokyo was proof that the top of a city-center skyscraper could offer its own sense of seclusion. And Aman New York is still another chapter in the evolution of this top-tier hospitality brand: a self-contained world of luxury right in the heart of Manhattan, on 57th Street at 5th Avenue.

Chelsea

There was never any question the legendary Hotel Chelsea would eventually face a significant update; it’s good for the Chelsea, and for New York, that it fell to Sean MacPherson to do it, along with partners Ira Drukier and Richard Born. MacPherson’s other hotels around town — the Marlton, the Bowery, the Maritime and more — help usher the romance of old New York into the modern era in a way that’s nostalgic but also authentic. And in the Chelsea, in particular, there’s much to be nostalgic about.

Broadway’s 1903-vintage Johnston Building was, in an earlier incarnation as the NoMad Hotel, instrumental in putting this neighborhood on the map for present-day New Yorkers. And now it’s the site of another step in the neighborhood’s evolution: The Ned NoMad, a members’ club and luxury boutique hotel that’s sister to the original Ned in the City of London.

For their first hotel in New York, Pendry — the urban luxury-hotel imprint of the Montage Resorts brand — is staking out new territory. Manhattan West is part of the huge Hudson Yards Redevelopment that’s changed the face of Midtown’s west side, and the Pendry Manhattan West, occupying an undulating glass tower by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, shifts the city’s luxury-hospitality center of gravity a bit further towards the Hudson.
