Two decades after the original Faena in Buenos Aires and one decade after its Miami Beach sequel, New York has now joined the Faena universe. Faena New York stands alongside the High Line, in Chelsea, on the westernmost block of 18th Street, a location that feels both connected to the city and also, somehow, in a world of its own — fitting for a hotel that aims to create an experience that’s quite unlike anything else.
What is it like? To call the Faena aesthetic “maximalist” almost feels like an understatement. The building, by Bjarke Ingels Group, is eye-catching enough, and the entry is grand in a way that’s uncommon in the boutique-hotel era. But it’s only once you’re inside that you’re treated to the sheer excess of the place, from the graphic murals and riotous colors of the public spaces to the animal prints and mirrored surfaces in the bedrooms.
And while Chelsea has plenty to recommend it, including countless galleries, restaurants and nightspots, there’s much to be said for staying in (including, by day, a 17,000-square-foot spa). La Boca, the restaurant, is a Francis Mallmann production, imported along with the Faena concept from Argentina. Meanwhile the Living Room cocktail bar features regular live performances, and is supplemented by the intimate, speakeasy-style El Secreto.
