On a walking street in the heart of historic Porto, right next door to the Misericórdia church and museum, PortoBay Flores is quite literally a collision of the old and the new: a 16th-century palace with a contemporary addition, which together comprise a thoroughly modern luxury boutique hotel.
The majority of the rooms and suites are contained within the new structure; the 11 in the old palace display a touch more historical character, while the 55 in the new addition are inevitably more modern in aspect. There’s no drop in quality, though, in either direction — all are stylish and impressively luxe.
Hidden within the compound is a lovely landscaped garden, for a rare moment of city-center calm. Meanwhile the hotel’s Mandalay Spa imports Indian and Thai therapies, while the Bistrô Flores and the Bar dos Maias offer a modern haute-cuisine spin on Portuguese traditions.
