Contemporary Classic en Secluded
Right on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, nearly a mile above sea level, is one of the region’s best-kept secrets. The Swag started its life as a private home, but gradually evolved into an inn; now, after the addition of a second lodge and a handful of outlying cabins, it’s something more akin to a luxury boutique resort.
The main house was built in the 20th century out of reclaimed wood, some of it dating back as far as 1785. Today, six rooms remain in the original house, and they’re the most historically minded of the accommodations. But the rooms in the newer Chestnut Lodge are in no way second-class — the look here and in the cabins is perhaps more contemporary, but still full of visual interest and authentic details.
There’s no restaurant in the traditional sense, but three meals a day are part of the rate: a hearty breakfast, a packed picnic lunch, and dinner back at the Swag House, an artful yet unpretentious affair that is, in some ways, a metaphor for the whole Swag experience.
