"HIO" is the nickname of the small village that is home to this restaurant. In the five-course tasting menu proposed here, vegetables take centre stage. Much of the produce comes from the restaurant's own garden, which is right by the house, or from local farmers. The chic and modern interior incorporates a smattering of rustic touches, with the open kitchen being a focal point. With just 16 places, the restaurant has something akin to a family atmosphere, and the service is friendly, pleasingly laid-back and professional. Upon arrival, guests are taken outside to enjoy hors-d'oeuvres by the charcoal grill and hear about the sustainable philosophy in place here. In addition to HIO, HILZHOF also houses another restaurant – MEIER – plus a handful of guestrooms.
