Some gleaming, towering modernist glass monolith just wouldn’t play in lovely, historic Barcelona. That’s why the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona makes its home where it does, in a classic bank building that’s the better part of a century old. The stately facade blends well with its tony Eixample surroundings on the Passeig de Gràcia, although inside the hotel follows Mandarin Oriental’s typically contemporary design codes.
The brand tapped esteemed Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola to oversee the luxury guest rooms and suites, which blend subdued shades and light wood furnishings with touches of blue and yellow in what is surely a nod to the usually sunny Barcelona sky. The only vestige of Asian influence, usually a Mandarin standard, is the general simplicity of the clean-lined open-plan spaces.
The One-MICHELIN-Starred Moments highlights Catalan cuisine while restaurant Blanc focuses on more relaxed Mediterranean fare, and evenings can kick off, or wind down, at Bankers Bar, where cocktails are served under a ceiling of old safety deposit boxes in a fun wink to the building’s former life. In contrast the spa has a moody futuristic feel with a pool backlight by dramatic green lighting, and offers a full wellness experience with facilities such as a steam room, hair salon, and fitness center, while on the rooftop you’re brought back to the present, on a pool deck with a panoramic view of the surrounding Barcelona skyline.
