As more boutique hoteliers set up shop in the Catskills we’re treated to an ever-increasing diversity of hotels. Kenoza Hall is a beauty: an 1880 Victorian boarding house set on 55 acres of lakefront land, lately transformed into a 22-room boutique hotel supplemented by a constellation of 10 freestanding bungalows and a private cottage. The rooms are decorated in a handsome modern-meets-vintage style, with plenty of nods to the house’s history, while the bungalows are more spacious version of the same, complete with gas stoves for staying cozy during the cooler months.
There’s a wellness focus, but not an obsessive one — Kenoza Hall is devoted to relaxation and restoration, all of it optional. The Hemlock Spa is the heart of it, offering hydrotherapy à la Sebastian Kneipp as well as a movement studio for yoga and a dreamy little outdoor swimming pool. The Catskills setting offers plenty of natural restoration as well, and the hotel’s restaurant and bar serves a locally sourced European-influenced menu with indoor and outdoor views of the lake.
