After extensive renovation the historical landmark once known as Yasaka Kaikan, a former theatre in the heart of Kyoto’s Gion district, has been reborn as the Imperial Hotel Kyoto. The 55 guest rooms are spread across the historic main building and a newly created wing and put a contemporary spin on Japanese style with a mix of neutral shades, traditional-style wood paneled walls and chic modern furnishings crafted from natural local materials. The two restaurants offer a choice of Japanese or French cuisine; there’s a low-lit cocktail bar and a second rooftop bar, which reserves its sweeping city views for hotels guests only. Meanwhile underneath the hotel an entire floor has been dedicated to creating a subterranean spa sanctuary with a pool, fitness room, thermal baths, and treatment rooms.
