Shanghai’s Xuhui district is notable for its 19th-century shikumen laneways, narrow roads lined with traditional brick townhouses. They’re a rarity in the high-rise era, but some have been preserved for their architectural heritage, and a few of them find new life as villas in the luxurious Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li. The three-story villas’ extravagant interiors incorporate Parisian influences, courtesy of designer Jaya Ibrahim, as well as the full complement of modern comforts, from Bose sound systems to Diptyque bath products.
An elaborately equipped spa is an integral part of the experience; this one offers a range of treatments influenced by traditional Chinese medicine. No less essential is the restaurant, Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire, the first outing in mainland China for the famed French chef. Nor is that the extent of the French influence — La Boulangerie is a classic Parisian-style bakery, and Le Bar maintains a European accent as well.
