A Norman manor house has been restored with artistic sensitivity at Verneuil La Douce, a contemporary countryside retreat just two hours outside Paris. Owner Camille Agnès Omerin envisaged the hotel as being an artistic project as much as a place to rest and revive, and enlisted the talents of a group of French creatives to reimagine the 140-year-old property with soothing shades, layers of soft tactile materials and decorative frescoes across the 17 rooms and public spaces.
The large conservatory-style Glassroom, covered with hand-painted frescoes inspired by Greek mythological, serves a place to unwind over afternoon tea by day or cocktails by night. Drinks can be followed by dinner at restaurant Patiné, which celebrates Normandy’s rich cuisine and seasonal produce sourced by the chef himself from the local Verneuil market. The all-year-round indoor pool opens onto a terrace and verdant gardens, home to two-hundred-year-old plane trees and an outdoor pool, which itself has become a work of art with a spring-inspired mosaic hiding at the bottom of the water. Relaxation can also be found in the small wellness area, which comprises a sauna, steam room, and a soothing spa menu signed by holistic beauty brand Holidermie.
