There’s a feeling of stepping back in time at Palazzo Santa Maria. Hidden away in one of Hermoupolis’s labyrinthine streets, the boutique address is housed in an 1874 neoclassical mansion, which although renovated to offer modern travelers all the necessary comforts of today, still retains plenty of historic charm and grandeur. Guest rooms are dressed in noble shades such as royal blue and rich burgundy, while suites show off previously hidden frescoes and a mix of artworks and antiques that include marble lamps and vintage Lalique crystal lights from the owner’s personal collection. Mornings start over a traditional Greek breakfast of local homemade produce, and although there is no restaurant, the town’s tavernas, bars and main square are just a few minutes’ walk away.
