This 186-room tower in Jing'an started life as a Four Seasons before a five-year gut job transformed it into Alila's first urban property in China. Designer Ju Bin carved out a fourth-floor courtyard under a glass ceiling, anchored by a 17-foot ceramic tree sculpture that's become the hotel's calling card. The space functions as much as a dining destination for Shanghai's well-heeled crowd as it does a hotel lobby. Rooms channel old Shanghai through blonde wood marquetry and rattan, with geometric bathroom tiles pulled straight from the city's classic mansions. The fifth-floor spa includes a heated pool with city views.
