In Photos: The Best Beach Hotels in the United States

It's a near — but not total — sweep by Florida, Hawaii and California on this list of best beach hotels in the U.S.

Like so much in life, the definition of a beach hotel may shift like grains of sand underfoot, depending on whom you ask. You may find some alleged beach hotels tucked blocks inland, or else directing their sunbathers to the shore of a rocky lake. But a true beach hotel? And the ones you'll find below? They're no more than a few mere steps from the coast — or else perched cliffside above one — with saltwater in the air and dramatic views from every angle.

With that exacting definition, find below seven of the best beach hotels in the United States. Each has not one but Two- or Three-MICHELIN-Keys to its name, and plenty more to recommend it outside plentiful surf and sunshine. For a global selection, head here for the best beach hotels around the world

Little Palm Island — Florida

What it’s all about: The only Three-Key beach resort in the continental States, a site for adventure and chill in equal measure.

Accessible only by boat or seaplane, Little Palm Island in a class of its own: nothing less than its own private island and an escape in the truest sense, its collection of thatched-roof bungalows set under bamboo-vaulted ceilings. In favor of natural sights and sounds, televisions and phones are absent from rooms.

Days start instead with beach yoga, before smooth transitions to kayaking through the mangroves or snorkeling excursions above the unspoiled reefs. Those here for longer stays may consider island hopping by seaplane to Dry Tortugas National Park.

The Chanler at Cliff Walk — Newport, Rhode Island

What it’s all about: An 1873-vintage mansion along Newport’s famed Cliff Walk and one of the few oceanfront properties of this quality in the Northeast.

It may stick out on a list like this, but the old colonial city of Newport is the peak of New England charm, today the site of folk festivals and international sailing races, and there is in fact a swimmable beach just steps beyond the hotel. The Chanler is itself one of Newport's stately Gilded Age mansions, all plush living rooms and handsome suites, but in summer its opulence is best enjoyed from the outdoors.

Guests enjoy French-inspired cuisine and private-label caviar on the terrace, or an eight-course blind tasting menu at the restaurant above the bay. The lawn is decorated with Adirondack chairs facing the sea and the Cliff Walk, the path that runs between Easton Bay and more of Newport’s famous mansions, is directly accessible from the hotel.

Faena Miami Beach — Miami, Florida

What it’s all about: Art, jazz, and plenty of entertainment across eight blocks of key South Beach oceanfront.

Miami may have the highest concentration of Key hotels in any beach town in the United States, but few have such a perfect waterside setting. Faena makes use of it with blocks of beachfront access and no shortage of restaurants, including MICHELIN-selected Los Fuegos by Francis Mallmann and Pao by Paul Qui, as well as a hidden spot for omakase and multiple late-night jazz bars.

Besides the nightlife, it's the arts scene that stands out. The hotel has its own theatre where they host ample live performances, as well as exhibitions, community art programs and the Project Room — a space for experimental artists and their avant garde work.

Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort — Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

What it’s all about: A historic accommodation and one of 15 Three-Key hotels in the U.S.

On the Northwest side of the island of Hawaii, Kona Village Resort is a journey through luxury and island traditions. Paddle at sunrise in an outrigger canoe or snorkel beneath Kahuwai Bay; fish the lagoon or enjoy feasts at the Kahuwai Cookhouse & Market, which celebrates paniolo (or Hawaiian cowboy) culture. Archeological site tours at the resort feature hundreds of petroglyphs where an ancient Hawaiian fishing village once stood and lessons in ukulele and lei-making permit visitors to leave with a new skillset.

Tennis, pickleball and bocce courts, a lap pool, yoga lessons and complimentary bicycles appeal to the more active, while those in need of more R&R will enjoy the spa’s plunge pools with volcanic terrain as backdrop.

Montage Laguna Beach — Laguna Beach, California

What it’s all about: Montage-level services in tony Laguna Beach.

Orange County is one of the country’s most opulent zip codes, and Montage Laguna Beach, perched on the bluffs above the Pacific, is its perfect luxe microcosm. But it’s also a throwback to the city’s days as an artist’s colony, when creatives flocked to Laguna Beach at the end of the 19th century for laid-back vibes and the inspiration of nature.

Today, one of the hotel's great features is a design that presents the ocean from every angle. From the balconies and terraces of villas and suites, from the floor-to-ceiling windows of the restaurant, sunshine glimmers over the Pacific. Stop at Bouchee for a coffee, French pastry or gelato, then stroll the lush grounds along the rocky bluff or on the white sand beaches below.

Halekulani Hotel — Honolulu, Hawaii

What it’s all about: A top luxury option in Waikiki for waves and peace in the midst of one of Hawaii’s most urban corners.

While most visitors to a beachfront town want to relax and unwind, Halekulani is set in a surf city that bustles, Hawaii’s famous Waikiki. But even with 500 rooms, Halekulani’s five acres of beachfront feel like their own island. Most rooms have sweeping views of the ocean and Diamond Head volcano, the same panorama experienced from beach lounge chairs or the hotel’s island-inspired, French-style restaurant.

At another restaurant, find nightly Hawaiian music, hula performances and fare from the brick oven. Free fitness classes, an on-site florist and complimentary access to some of the island’s great museums and cultural spaces complete the picture.

Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach — Palm Beach, California

What it’s all about: An active space for families, and everyone else, on a beautiful slice of sandy Palm Beach.

On a private stretch of beach in what is widely considered America’s first resort town, a particularly great spot for families or multi-generation escapes, with activities from golf and volleyball to mixology tutorials and sunrise yoga. On Thursday evenings, the bar becomes an ode to Cuban culture, while daytime is for taking hotel bikes out to Worth Avenue.

Though it’s one of the only family resorts in Palm Beach with a teen game room, full-service kids club and free dining for kids under five, the property does a fine job keeping the little ones away from couples, offering a separate adults-only pool.
