Hotelier Chris King has turned a 17th-century gunpowder mill, complete with mixing pots now repurposed as fire pits, into a 55-room retreat where artistic ambition meets genuine warmth. Designer Christodoulou rejected country house cliché: the library bar layers cherry-red walls beneath an acid-green ceiling. The Green Room channels Seventies intimacy with metallic ceilings and emerald-topped tables. Rooms favor texture over ostentation: woven blankets, reclaimed timber furniture, terracotta-tiled bathrooms, with local makers credited throughout. The 78-acre estate offers foraging walks, pottery sessions, and sauna rituals, though King's achievement lies in refusing to choose between comfort and experimentation.
