Soo K. Chan rebuilt his childhood home, a pair of black-and-white shophouses inside the Khoo Kongsi clan compound, into 15 suites that strip away Penang’s usual Peranakan nostalgia. The suites run deep like traditional shophouses, each lit by a central skylight above water features and shivling fountains. Alabaster pendants hover over marble tables, herringbone floors meet custom dark armchairs, and nearly everything was commissioned rather than sourced. Byredo toiletries and Dyson appliances acknowledge today’s expectations, but the real luxury is silence. Armenian Street's mural-chasing crowds feel distant despite being two blocks away.
