For decades, The Phoenicia Malta has been known as one of the top hotels on the island. But even if you knew the old Phoenicia, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. In its current incarnation the new edition of The Phoenicia Malta combines top-flight luxury with no small amount of stylistic distinction, and a standard of service that’s substantially above and beyond the norm.
The location, at the edge of Valletta’s old fortified city center, is a prestigious one, and a convenient one as well — almost anything you’d wish to see or do is a short walk away. Once inside, though, you’re transported from the medieval city walls to the early 20th century, arguably the golden age of British luxury hospitality. And while the atmosphere is classic, the finishes are quite up to date — the hotel looks as new today as it must have looked on the day it opened nearly a century ago.
Rooms retain many of their original architectural features, along with an updated, more contemporary look, and all the expected modern luxuries. The elegant Contessa is the flagship restaurant that anchors the hotel’s social life, along with Palm Court Lounge for afternoon tea, The Club Bar with its classic cocktails, and Bastion Pool Bar, with the Phoenicia’s most surprising feature: an infinity pool with a view of the harbor. The rest of the wellbeing facilities are spread across the vast two floor spa and include an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, and a Himalayan salt room, while yoga and Pilates classes take place outside in the hotel’s more than seven hectares of verdant private gardens.
